NORTH WILTS and Stratton Churchway retained their titles at the Wiltshire Women’s Domestic finals staged last Friday at North Wilts Bowls Club, writes DAVE EATON.
The Chippenham-based club had a comfortable 24-6 victory over Alderbury in the Officers Cup with a halt being called early after only 16 ends.
North Wilts trio of Jane Humphries, 2010 Wiltshire Women’s president June Coyle and Fizz Mace, were 4-2 down after five ends but then turned the tables collecting 12 shots without reply to move into a 14-4 lead at 10.
They made home advantage pay handsomely, continuing to pile up the shots and pulled away to a resounding 18 shot win.
Stratton Churchway safely defended their Benevolent Triples crown leading from start to finish against Amesbury.
Janet Hardie (Box), twice a former national champion, added another title to her vast array of county successes over the years.
She was always in control in the Champion of Champions competition against Highworth’s Linda Kingston.
Hardie led 16-3 after 10 ends and despite a Kingston revival claimed a 21-13 victory on the 19th end.
Spencer Melksham duo of Wendy Clayton and Marilyn Jay easily brushed aside Westlecot’s challenge for a comprehensive 22-7 success in the Secretaries and Treasurers final.
The morning session of play saw eight players battling it out for supremacy in the Two-Wood Unbadged Singles competition.
Yvonne Atkins (Devizes) took the honours with a narrow 15-12 victory over Janet Watkins (Box) in a final that went to the last end.
Earlier, Atkins had edged home against Eileen Oliver 12-11 but then thumped Lesley Trattles 16-7 in the semi-finals.
Watkins began with a narrow 16-14 win over Carol Woodbridge and followed that up with another tense two shot victory over Avon’s Dawn Edwards.
