CHIPPENHAM golfer Paul Bloomfield will realise a dream that’s been 25 years in the making when he competes for Wales in the Senior Home Internationals next week.
The 57 year-old, who plays out of Chippenham Golf Club, clinched his place in the eight-man Welsh squad by coming top of the pack at the inaugural South Wales Senior Open at Southerndown last month.
Bloomfield, who hails from Cardiff and has lived in the town for 10 years, will represent his country from September 14-16 at the Crail Golfing Society in Scotland. He revealed that he thought his chance of competing for Wales passed him by a quarter of a century ago.
“You always dream of representing your country and I did actually get into the Wales squad in my younger days,” said Bloomfield, who works as a property developer and lives on Audrey Close.
“It was 25 years ago and I was in a squad of 10 but it got trimmed to eight and I didn’t make the final team – I did think my chance had long gone.
“I found out that I could have a chance of making the team if I put in a good performance at the Open and it was great that I ended up winning it.”
The internationals will pit the Welsh against England, Ireland and Scotland in a round-robin matchplay event.
Bloomfield added: “It’s fantastic to have qualified and I’m proud to be representing my country and Chippenham Golf Club.”
