CHIPPENHAM Town's pre-season friendly against Blue Square Premier opponents Newport County, scheduled for Tuesday, July 31, has been cancelled.

The Welsh side are now playing Premier League side Swansea City on that date.

Chippenham have yet to announce if a replacement fixture will be sought, but have confirmed the dates of their other friendlies.

Meanwhile, Chippenham Town have announced the appointment of Alyn Owens as club chaplain.

Born in South Wales and educated at schools in Leicester, Reverend Owens attended Bristol University before being ordained at St Helens in Lancashire, and has held a lifelong interest in sport.

As a teenager he supported Leicester City, while before his retirement in 2003 he held a season ticket for Watford, and since moving to Wiltshire has regularly supported the Bluebirds.

Reverend Owens will be available to all staff, players and supporters should they wish to discuuss concerns over any issues.

Chippenham Town vice-chairman Neil Blackmore stated, “We are very pleased to have Reverend Owens on board as part of our commitment to the community.”

Town fans are again arranging a sponsored walk or cycle ride to Calne for their annual clash with Toolstation League side Calne Town in the Fred Rutty Cup on Saturday, July 21.

The 15-mile round trip is mainly along the old Chippenham to Calne railway line which is now a designated cycle path.

Walkers will set off from Hardenhuish Park at 11am, while those wishing to cycle will start an hour later at noon.

After the match there will be a barbecue back at Hardenhuish Park to welcome the fans back, which will also be attended by the players.
