'We need to do our jobs at set-pieces,' says Rudge (From This Is Wiltshire)

Chippenham Town manager Nathan Rudge thinks that his side need to ensure that they defend properly from set-pieces after their disappointing defeat at Banbury United yesterday.

The Bluebirds were undone by a second half suckerpunch as Jack Ashton headed home the winner for the Oxfordshire hosts and Rudge was left pointing the finger at the player that should have been marking the Banbury man.

“We could have been four or five goals up in the first half but we haven’t taken our chances and inevitably, it’s a set-piece that’s undone us, which is massively disappointing,” said the Chippenham chief.

“There were three points there for the taking but we’ve been undone because someone didn’t want to do their job.

“We spend two or three hours a week looking at the opposition and what they’ve got and giving people numbers of who they’ve go to mark and then someone not doing their job costs you.

“We missed chances and fair enough, you can have a go at the lads that missed them but you’ve got to defend – set-piece defending is a massive part of the game.

“It’s criminal being beat by a set-piece when we’ve got about six lads who are over six foot tall and they had just one.”

Injury prevented new signing Tyrone Mings from making his Chippenham debut while Rudge hinted that he may make changes for next Tuesday’s clash with Bashley at Hardenhuish Park.

The Bluebirds boss also revealed that he has no plans to bring in a replacement for Dave Gilroy, who has left the club to join rivals Frome Town.

“It’s not somewhere we’ll be looking for a replacement,” said Rudge.

“Dave’s been a good servant to Chippenham – he’s been first class to me and Rich (Fey) and he’s not caused a problem for one minute.

“He was down the pecking order and he wanted to play football, so I’d never stand in anyone’s way that wanted to do that and I wish him all the best.”
