RUGBY: Westbury 39 Calne 12

WESTBURY hosted Calne for the first time in a number of years in the first round of the Dorset & Wilts 1st XV Vase and triumphed with a display of attractive attacking rugby.

Five minutes in Danny Gould, starting for the first time in the fly-half shirt, kicked to the corner and, from a shortened lineout, veteran scrum-half Bryan Clarke found number eight Andy Haughain who powered over the line.

The game remained close but, from the back of ruck, Clarke spotted a gap down the blindside and passed to full back Nigel Kershaw who outpaced the defence to score in the corner.

Seven minutes later after a number of phases in Calne half the ball was moved to centre Koro Sitiveni who crashed over in the corner.

Then on the half-hour, Westbury scored a fantastic team try with the ball passing through several pairs of hands and second row Gareth Vaughan crashing over.

Calne started the second half in the ascendency and scored a converted try. But Westbury responded when Vaughan took a quick lineout and Chris Lanfear’s searing pace took him towards the line where he found Kershaw, whose pass to prop Chris Pearce sent him over the line.

Lanfear added his first conversion of the afternoon and substitute back row Nathan Brown then scored a trademark try, powering through the defenders, again converted by Lanfear.

Calne scored a consolation try late on, but from the restart, openside flanker Andrew Twinney offloaded to Haughain who broke through the defence for Westbury’s seventh try as they booked a quarter finals trip to Swindon College Old Boys.
