Cup is welcome break for Supermarine

SUPERMARINE will be hoping to use the Dorset & Wilts Intermediate Cup as a welcome respite to the rigours of the league when they face Weymouth in the quarter-finals this weekend.

Marine have yet to pick up a point this term following their promotion to Southern Counties South, with defeat to Wootton Bassett on Saturday their fourth in four outings.

However, they take on a Weymouth team who have also struggled during the early weeks of the campaign and currently sit third-from-bottom of Marine’s division.

“We’re a bit depleted this weekend as originally it was a free day when the fixture list came out,” Marine coach Gavin Russ told the Advertiser.

“It’s two trips down to Weymouth in a week, with us going in the league next week, and it’s not exactly close. But we’ll go down there, do our best and as long as we keep on improving then that’s what we want to see.

“The changes that I’m trying to bring in don’t happen overnight and it will take time for everyone to adapt.

“We will go down there in a buoyant mood and looking to keep spirits high and not give them the edge ahead of next week.”

Elsewhere, Bassett travel to Devizes for their quarter-final.

In the Dorset & Wilts Senior Vase, Swindon College Old Boys entertain Westbury and will be fully rested after a fortnight without a game, while Cricklade visit Puddletown in the Dorset & Wilts Junior Vase.
