Athletics: Toby Ulm has his sights set on the World Junior Championships as he looks to bounce back from injury with a bang.

The hurdler, from Stockwell Road in Devizes, is studying at Georgetown University in Washington and is preparing for the outdoor season.

He hasn't been helped by a persistent foot injury but he believes he can make the IAAF World Junior Championships in Poland in July.

"The world qualifying time is 51.5 seconds so that's well within my grasp in the next few weeks," said the former St John's School pupil.

"I'm hoping to open up at a dash under 52 seconds and I'm going to open next weekend at the Colonial Relays at William and Mary University.

"I was meant to run at a small meet in North Carolina but I asked for an extra week so I can work on hurdling and getting my foot healthy again."

The championships in Poland are a realistic aim for the Swindon Harrier and will make up for the disappointment after he missed the US nationals last month.

Ulm said: "The medical team here say its planta facetious. It's not a major injury, it's best described as a really annoying niggle.

"But it did keep me out of indoor nationals. It was very disappointing and hard to take when they said I would not be travelling down to Arkansas but it was definitely the right decision.

"I would have made the team better but it's about the big picture too, the Worlds."

Meanwhile, the 18-year-old is enjoying his first year in America, despite his hectic schedule.

"I'm not liking French, I think I'm going to have to resign to a B in that class," he joked.

"Juggling school and training isn't too bad."
