Bowood Welcome to Bowood House
BOWOOD House in Chippenham
is the magnificent family home of the Marquis and Marchioness of Lansdowne.
It was
designed by Robert Adam in the eighteenth century.
On display within the house are remarkable collections of family heirlooms
and works of art, built up over 250 years.
Interesting rooms include Robert Adams’ Library, the Laboratory where Dr.
Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen in 1774, and the Chapel that is still used
for family services.
The house overlooks the terraced gardens towards the 40-acre lake and beautiful
Capability Brown parkland.
Other spectacles include the Cascade, Doric Temple, Pinetum and Arboretum.
The separate Rhododendron Walks are open late April – mid-June depending on
flowering season.
With the celebrated Licensed Restaurant and Coffee Shop on site, Bowood provides
an ideal family day-out.
