Roundway Hill Welcome to Roundway Hill
ROUNDWAY Hill, just north
of the A361 Swindon road, is the site of the Civil War Battle of Roundway
Down.
In 1643, Charles I was trying to secure the South West for the Royalists but
the Parliamentarian army pursued the Royalists to Roundway Hill at Devizes
where a battle took place.
The Royalists secured victory at Roundway but were eventually defeated by
Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army in 1645.
From its summit, breathtaking views of the area can be enjoyed and there is
a countryside trail on the hill itself.
You can also see the new Devizes Millennium white horse, cut in 1999 to celebrate
the new millennium.
The hill can be accessed along the A361 from Devizes to Marlborough.
