County Fayre, Swindon

THERE is something reassuring about queueing up for your fish and chips behind two local paramedics.

I mean, they must have to eat on the run all the time, so if they choose to go there for their tea it must be good, right?

In fact, I’d already been given a glowing endorsement of ‘York Road chippie’, as County Fayre is more commonly known. Our friends say it’s the best in town and, judging by the queue on a Thursday night, plenty of other people feel the same.

Luckily, the staff are used to dealing with a crowd. Although there were 10 other people in the shop when we got there, our order was taken straight away and we were on our way home within five minutes - fast food indeed.

Our tastes never vary when it comes to food from the chip shop. I always have cod, my husband has a pie, one boy has fishcakes and the other a jumbo sausage - all with chips, of course - and while a pie is a pie wherever you go, you can always judge how good a place is by its fish.

I’m pleased to say County Fayre lived up to its billing. The cod was thick, juicy and gleaming white inside, with a crunchy batter that hadn’t gone soggy with grease. The chips were fat and still steaming hot by the time we ate them. While there were far too many for me, the others squabbled over who would polish them off, so I know they went down well.

Everyone agreed that there was nothing to dislike about the meal – and every reason to go back.

And at £11.50 to feed a family a four, this new convert to the York Road chippie could be making a return visit soon. - Michelle Tompkins
