After hearing that the star-studded cast of The Wolfman booked the exclusive use of the Castle Inn in Castle Combe while filming in the village, I was intrigued to find out what the attraction is.
The 12th century hotel and restaurant fits perfectly into the beautiful village, and staff offer a warm welcome on arrival.
We sat near a window where we could watch a few determined tourists brave the rain while we perused the extensive menu.
Having already checked out the choice online beforehand – always a bonus in my book – I was tempted by the homemade soup of the day (courgette), but we decided to share a plate of the roasted vegetables topped with goat’s cheese and pesto (£7.25).
The starter was served on a large square plate and the vegetables were topped with a round slab of goat’s cheese, circles by pesto.
The vegetables were cooked perfectly and we finished off the creamy cheese with slices of warm brown bread.
Slightly disappointed that the pie of the day – steak and kidney – had just run out, my partner chose chilli con carne (£9.95) for his main, while I opted for chicken curry (£11.50).
Both were served with basmati rice and Stew was pleased when his large portion came with garlic bread and tortilla chips.
The mains were both filling and flavoursome, but not too spicy, and the curry was made with an equal amount of chicken and vegetables.
Never one to turn down a dessert, despite not finishing the curry, I ordered bread and butter pudding (£5.75) after being told there was no more lemon tart.
Served on a bed of custard, the pudding was as it should be – comforting and sweet, and just the right size.
This is a delightful setting in one of the country’s prettiest villages, and the attentive staff were only too eager to please.
Add to that a kitsch bathroom with real towels and designer hand lotion, and you’re on to a winner.
Our meal, with the addition of two soft drinks, came to £39.60.
