AN award-winning pub in Lacock is reeling the customers in with a range of fish dishes on the menu.

The George Inn, which was named as one of the best 50 pubs in Britain earlier this year, is selling a host of seafood dishes that are proving very popular.

Second chef James Shore, 24, who has worked at the George Inn for four months, has been given the task of providing customers with the fish menu He said: "We have really been trying to push our regular fresh seafood dishes.

"Monday and Tuesday are the main days we serve them and we have plenty of different fish dishes on the menu at any one time."

Mr Shore trained as a chef at Wiltshire College in Trowbridge at the age of 16, and has worked in a number of different places, including the Royal Oak at Hawkridge, where he was head chef.

"I've always wanted to try and cook a variety of fish dishes, so we have really pushed the boat out and so far it's going very well," he said.

"The menu seems to be very popular with the customers and they are getting things like sea bass, monkfish and various other exotic fish.

"The menu board changes every day and has about 20 specials, of which about seven of them will be fish."

The George Inn is one of the most historic pubs in the country, and has been a public house since 1365.

It is famous for a grand open fireplace featuring a dog spit, which used to be turned by dogs running on a treadmill.

It also has a range of other medieval features including beamed ceilings.

In addition to the extensive seafood menu, the George Inn provides a range of other meals at lunchtime and in the evening, and has a good selection of beers.

In January, the Independent newspaper published a list of the top British pubs, which included the George Inn, compiled by food critic Jane Peyton, who has written a book called Pub Scene.
