Marlborough
Marlborough and Pewsey Town Guide

MARLBOROUGH is reputedly the resting
place of Merlin, King Arthur's sorcerer, and
today it is still a magical place, attracting tens
of thousands of visitors a year.
According to folklore, the mound in the
grounds of the town's famous public school is
where Merlin is buried, although archaeologists
claim it is a Neolithic monument of the
same period as Silbury Hill.
Marlborough stands astride the A4, formerly
the Great West road that connected the
cities of London, Bath and Bristol.
It is a perfect touring base for those interested
in the prehistoric sites of Stonehenge
and Avebury, Littlecote House and many
other places of historic interest.
Nearby Pewsey is one of Wiltshire's largest
villages and a thriving close-knit community
that can be reached by rail and boat as well
as by road. Standing on the northern edge of Salisbury
Plain, Pewsey is skirted by the Kennet and
Avon Canal and has its own mainline railway
station that has made this and other local villages
popular with commuters.
