THE 16th Swindon Young Musician of the Year Competition attracted 25 entrants at the weekend.
The event was held at the Blunsdon House Hotel and had the largest audience to date, with approximately 160 people in attendance.
It has been organised every year since 1997 by the Rotary Club of Swindon North.
The adjudicator was Paul Turner, an accomplished local pianist, who has worked in Buenos Aires, Berlin, London and Paris, to name only a few places.
He said: “I’d like to thank the competitors for making my job so difficult as they were all of such a high standard.”
Certificates and WH Smith vouchers were presented to the victorious musicians by the Mayor of Swindon, Coun Ray Ballman.
The winner of the junior section (under 14s) was Lucy Jenkins, a pupil at Kingsdown School who sang ‘The Sound of Music’ by Rodgers & Hammerstein.
The senior section (musicians aged 15 to 17) was won by Faye Rogers playing alto saxophone.
She chose to play Bill Holcombe’s The Blues Concerto 2nd Movement ‘Pastoral’.
Master of Ceremonies, the Rev Geoffrey Gleed, said: “The beauty of this competition is the diversity of instruments including the human voice which is a beautiful instrument in its own right.”
