Devizes Festival: Harp Recital, St Andrews Church

A large audience at St Andrew’s Church on Tuesday lunchtime was utterly delighted by a virtuoso performance from harpist Lizzy Scorah.

Her programme, ranging from early French to modern work, allowed her opportunity to demonstrate her remarkable skills.

Queen of Spades by Kitka was a piece in which the harp produces sounds not usually associated with it – strange twangs and reverberations as well as drum beats made on its frame – all carried off with great panache.

Lizzy also charmed the audience in the way in which she delivered information between the pieces. Particularly of interest was the fact that her ‘killer heels’ made it easier to work the pedals on the harp!

Her versatility and empathy with her audiences was further illustrated by later performances of ‘afternoon tea’ music at Devizes Almshouses and a most successful workshop with pupils at Rowdeford School.
