I READ with interest yesterday about Robert Buckland’s promotion to Solicitor General.

I can completely understand why this post appeals to Mr Buckland and do not begrudge him his success. Indeed, given his long-standing commitment to human rights and the UK’s role within the world I hope he shows the courage of his convictions and can act as a counterweight to the overall direction which the Prime Minister took in the reshuffle.

However, it does concern me that the MP for South Swindon is taking on such a demanding role now. At the same time Mr Buckland was promoted, it emerged that potentially half of all the children centres in Swindon could be closed.

It is important the residents of South Swindon are not under-represented while their MP familiarises himself with his new job in Westminster, and the closure of so many children centres is a timely demonstration of the kind of issue that affects ordinary families in Swindon, and one in which their MP should be involved.

What reassurances do we have that Mr Buckland will have the time to take action on what is important to the people of Swindon? Or will he just spend all his time in the House of Commons now?
