WHILE I feel sorry for the mother and her son after the hammer attack on him while being a pupil at The Ridgeway School in Swindon, I cannot agree that Robert Buckland, MP for South Swindon, should be made to stand down from his new post as Solicitor General.
Even knowing that Mr Buckland, along with a Mr Robin Sheallard, were found guilty of breaching the code of conduct of the Bar of England and Wales, the fact that they were not fined and were allowed to carry on working in their profession shows that what had taken place was not deemed to be of a serious nature.
Why blame or try to use Robert Buckland as a scapegoat? Is it because it could be felt he is not an honest politician or human being? Well, just look around at most of the politicians today and, come to that most human beings. An old and very wise saying from the good book comes to mind: “He who is without blame may cast the first stone...”
I am not a member of the Conserative Party or a great supporter of the party or this government but I do know and have met Robert Buckland at political events, private events and in and around Swindon and I have always found him to be a complete gentleman, honest and very approachible.
I would hate to think that something as minor as a misdemeanour or a misjudgement – which the Law Society must have thought – should cast a shadow over someone that could or should make an excellent Solicitor General.
