I SEE that the ‘not in my backyard’ brigade is active again, this time regarding the proposed care home at Okebourne Park (Adver, July 26).
Perhaps if these people considered the facts they would be more understanding, but I doubt it. My daughter works for a similar establishment. There a small number of severely autistic young adults, some of whom I have met, who are looked after, around the clock, by a very caring staff.
These young adults are given the opportunity to live as near as possible a normal life in the community, a right that everyone deserves. They are able to attend school, go swimming, visit libraries, cinemas and parks, go shopping, pop in to the local pub, enjoy a ride round the countryside and even go on holiday, always under constant supervision.
Would the Okebourne residents deny them these rights? Perhaps they would prefer to see them locked away in an institution, as they were not so long ago.
