With regards to Mary Gladman’s letter (SA September 17) concerning yet another high-sided vehicle hitting one of Swindon’s low bridges.
I wrote a letter to the Adver a few months ago asking the council to put their thinking caps on to try and solve this ongoing problem.
Having looked online for possible solutions, I noticed they have a very successful device in Georgia, USA.
It’s a simple message written on a large metal road sign dangling from chains above the road. It states, “If you hit this sign, you will hit that bridge”. I’m sure it will almost certainly stop the driver from continuing and getting wedged under the bridge.
This seems like a cheap effective deterrent that is surely worth a try. Type “if you hit this bridge” into Google images, you will see the sign.
Maybe an Eastern European translation will be needed for some foreign drivers.
