Sad memories
Media reports that the unfortunate Alan Henning was strongly advised, for his own safety, not to enter Syria, bring my own experience to mind.
Whilst serving with 296 Sqn RAF in French Morocco, Algeria to Tunisia during WW2, all camp personnel were paraded adjacent to the CO’s tent, who informed us that a number of servicemen had been waylaid and murdered for their possessions by unfriendly natives.
He then issued strict orders that no one was to enter Arab communities unaccompanied. Needless to say his orders were obeyed. The words of Rudyard Kipling come to mind.
