HG Smith writes to the Adver suggesting that the solution to problems in the Middle East is to kill everyone who lives there with nuclear bombs. Not for him the namby- pamby ideas of our current rulers.

The latter, remember, want to help people in the Middle East by bombing them but for HG Smith they make the mistake of leaving some men, women and children alive.

It is symptomatic of the corrosive effect of Western foreign policy that a paper would publish such a deranged final “solution” as if it were normal.

Western thirst for strategic power and then oil has left an appalling legacy with the peoples of the Middle East.

The West has foisted a set of vicious, backward dictatorships on the area. By turns “we” have armed and trained violent Jihadists and their political ancestors, and then bombed them along with countless civilians.

In Iraq the US administration fostered the sectarianism which is now spreading its poison.

Only in such an appallingly desperate terrain could a murderous group with no redeeming features, like ISIS, grow.

The current policy of the West – do all the things that caused the problems but do them more – will only make the situation worse.
