I have to write to say what a superb show I watched at the Wyvern Theatre the other night – it was the simply stunning SALOS with their outstanding first night performance of Oliver.

All the characters gave West End standard performances, including the formidable, fabulous, and funny Fagin – quite brilliantly played by James Canning, the nice and nurturing Nancy, with a beautiful voice to match, portrayed by Jill McCrae, a bold and brutal Bill Sykes (Martin Whiteley), a bumbling Mr Bumble (Stuart Dark), a wonderful and witty widow Corny (Alison Canning), a very sinister and sour Mrs Sowerberry, played by the very funny Amy Cole, a delightfully devious Dodger superbly played with great character and charm by Charlie Lock, and an innocently outstanding Oliver (played by Ben Canning and Kyle Iles).

Not forgetting the fantastic Fagin’s gang and the charismatic children’s chorus – all who performed with such enthusiasm and energy, bringing their own individuality through in each of their characters, and were always full of fun and mischief, and always in character.

Their singing, dancing and acting was superb – all of them stars in the making. There were many other brilliant performances from the rest of the awesome cast with great sets and scenery to match, and accompanied by a wonderful orchestra led by magnificent Malcolm Webb. It was brilliantly directed by Russell Langdown and beautifully choreographed by Gemma Short.

Well done SALOS and everyone involved, you are all stars. The show was a real tribute to everyone’s hard work and commitment and I can’t wait for the next one!
