All of the suggestions made recently to improve safety at Regent Circus seem to focus on slowing traffic on Commercial Road. Perhaps the problem is Commercial Road carries too much traffic?

This will only get worse when Fleming Way is closed to all traffic except buses. In addition, traffic heading west from the Regent Circus area has little choice other than to use Crombey Street, a narrow one lane road.

The Advertiser has reported in the past that this, together with the current work, is part of a long term scheme for Swindon’s traffic, but no details have been published.

Perhaps the Advertiser could do some investigation and find out what the council’s intentions are. Perhaps they intend to make it impossible to travel from east to west (or vice versa) through the town centre; that would certainly seem to be the effect of the plans we know about.

In the meantime, I have a relatively simple suggestion that might improve the current situation at Regent Circus. How about opening up the currently cut off part of Eastcott Hill as a one way street south bound and closing off the link from Commercial Road to Crombey Street?

This would allow the road from the bottom of Eastcott Hill to Regent Circus to be reduced to one lane, making it easier to cross, and at the same time make it easier to cross to the new retail site.
