Many readers will have nearly choked on their breakfast cornflakes as they opened their Swindon Advertiser and read the sorry story that investment in the town’s leisure facilities is unlikely to occur any time soon.

The great ‘give away’ was predicated on the new owners being able to provide investment which the council was unable to do.

Indeed, Councillor Williams is on record in describing the handover to GLL, saying: “We think this is a great deal, which secures investments for these sites which could not happen if they remained in public ownership”.

Warming to his theme he said “GLL met all our key outcomes”, and yet within one month of taking over the leisure sites Greenwich Leisure Ltd (GLL) announce the cupboard may indeed be bare.

As for moving the gym at the Link, it beggars belief that Coun Williams has the gall to state: “The council has for a number of years been looking at relocating the gym downstairs”.

If the location of the gym was so important to the revenue stream why wasn’t action taken?

Officers and councillors should hang their heads in shame at their infinite capacity to spend years thinking rather than actually doing something.
