In your article about the policing of the local derby clash between Swindon and Bristol you say ‘more officers appeared to counter the rapid influx of Town fans, the welcoming committee’.
I would like to point out, as somebody caught up in this situation, the police held us back from entering the ground for over ten minutes, hence creating the ‘welcoming committee’. We were a group of ordinary fans of all ages, who were then subjected to verbal abuse, threatening behaviour and coins being thrown at us. It was a situation created by the police that I felt put us all in more danger than if they let us get into the ground quickly. If they needed to hold anyone up, it should have been the Bristol yobs, who I’m sure were very grateful to the police for giving them such a large audience to intimidate and abuse on their way into the club. Shame on Wiltshire policing.
