Bill Williams is too modest. His entertaining but misguided attack on wind turbines, recycling the mistaken belief that they are dangerous monsters, was worthy of Don Quixote.

It came as no surprise that Mr Williams relied upon the misleadingly named Renewable Energy Foundation for his propaganda. This organisation, founded by TV personality Noel Edmonds and largely funded by a few wealthy landowners, is not generally considered to be independent or objective in its assessment of wind power.

I trust Mr Williams will join me in condemning the estimated £1.2 billion with which the United Kingdom Government subsidises the exploration and development of offshore and unconventional oil and gas. This year looks like being the hottest since records began, so it is insane, indeed suicidal, to waste taxpayers’ money searching for yet more fossil fuels when the scientific consensus is that at least two-thirds of already proven reserves must be left in the ground.

In a previous letter, Bill Williams said his party “will abolish green taxes and charges in order to reduce fuel bills.” This is a short-sighted policy.

A portion of the green levy goes to providing an energy rebate for vulnerable and low income households. It also funds the ‘Green Deal’ which provides loans for people to make energy improvements to their homes. Reducing energy waste is by far the best way in the long term to protect senior citizens and other vulnerable people from the cold.
