National charity Epilepsy Action is seeking readers’ help to celebrate those doing a brilliant job of supporting children and young people with epilepsy.

For this, we’re asking readers to nominate an outstanding local nursery, school, college or university for an ‘Edward’ education award.

In the UK, Epilepsy affects an estimated 63,400 children and young people aged under 18.[1] Past research has suggested that up to half of these affected children and young people underachieve academically in relation to their intellectual ability.

Local residents, parents and teaching staff can now get involved and highlight the great work being done to support students with epilepsy. Previous ‘Edward’ winners have trained staff and pupils in first aid, held myth-busting assemblies and even introduced buddy systems for children with epilepsy.

Alongside this, the nominated settings will be following new Department of Education guidance on supporting students with medical conditions.

All these things can help ensure that children and young people with epilepsy receive the best support while they learn and reach their full potential. They also promote awareness and understanding to enhance a pupil’s daily life, beyond their academic setting.

Anyone can nominate a school or educational setting for an Edward on Epilepsy Action’s website. https://www.epilepsy.org.uk/campaigns/education/professionals/edwards-awards .

The closing date for entries is Wed 15 April. Award winners will be notified by Friday 24 April and the awards will be presented during National Epilepsy Week, 17-23 May.
