I do not pay a lot of attention to television adverts, the unsolicited increase in volume I find particularly annoying. However ,I must admit the Freeview advert about the cat serenading the budgie I find hilarious, as well as very touching.

Having worn prescriptions glasses for 68 years due to a childhood accident, I find some of the Specsavers adverts very amusing as well. However, harsh reality finally appeared, as it always does, a few days ago. Walking down Regent Street last week, a young lady approached me and said, "Hi handsome". I looked behind me to see what Adonis she was referring to. "No", she gestured, "You".

"Can I help you Miss?" I politely enquired. "Could you direct me to Specsavers" she answered.

Until fairly recently coal, and to a lesser extent nuclear, has provided the lion’s share of generating the industrialised nation’s electricity. Now, our politicians seem to have swallowed the doctrine of climate change being driven by increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels like coal.

It is of interest to me why so many scientists support this doctrine. I can understand why politicians support such a hypothesis, as renewable energy is such a nice little earner for those who invest in wind turbines or solar panels and insulation schemes – all to be funded by the poor old domestic electricity consumer in consequently higher charges on electric bills.

The hypothesis of picking on carbon dioxide seems flawed, as not so long ago (tens of thousands of years), great changes occurred with the melting of vast ice sheets over northern Europe and America, when mankind was thinner on the ground and the only combustion occurring was cave camp fires.
