AFTER winning the first all-Tory Government in 18 years, David Cameron announced he wants to fast track the lowering of the benefits cap to a mind-boggling £23,000 from £27,000 per year.

Where do these politicians get these figures from to pay people for sitting at home doing nothing?

Don’t get me wrong, if someone is ill or not able to work due to medical reasons, then that’s a different story.

I have men and women working with me on a 47 hours-a-week contract who are the main breadwinners in their family with little children to look after, and either rent or a mortgage to pay, food to buy and utility bills – but don’t earn anywhere near a basic salary of £27,000 or even £23,000.

If they, like millions of other hardworking people who wish to get to the benefits cap level, have to work weekends (no time to spend with the family, trouble at home, working all the time) or work overtime during the week, where is the justice in that comparison?

Slog your guts out to earn less than the benefits cap or sit at home day in, day out watching TV. Talk about politicians’ double talk.

On one hand they are telling us they want working people to be better off by actually working – and then you get hit with: “Well, if you don’t work, you can earn up to £23,000 a year by doing nothing”. Logical thinking, I don’t think.
