IN HIS column of June 24, Robert Buckland reminded us that June 27 was Armed Forces Day and he would be opening the festivities at Faringdon Road Park for a day of commemoration.
No mention in the column of the estimated 30 million people worldwide who find themselves displaced because of war, or the millions trapped in war torn countries, of which this country must take much responsibility for both situations.
No commemorations for these people. June 27 was another day of struggle for many and it was spent in a squalid refugee camp somewhere in the world with parents waiting and hoping for food to arrive to feed themselves and their children.
Armed Forces Day appears to be something of a carnival and overlooks the death, destruction, human misery and the suffering that only war can bring.
Those millions suffering from war and the effects of war would probably say the same as me; there is nothing to celebrate about Armed Forces Day.
