IN his recent letter, Mr Hayward mentions the House of Lords having quite a numerous assembly, all receiving £300 per day to attend its sessions in these times of austerity.

Surely, in spite of the fact the assembly do a fine job revising legislation from the House of Commons, most of these members, with a few exceptions (Mrs D Lawrence comes to mind), have from their previous careers considerable pensions to fund their lives.

As membership is an honour in being appointed to such an august body, I doubt, especially in these times of austerity, that most of these members need to be paid £300 per day for attending.
