ON MY normal commute heading towards Westfield Way on August 10, I noticed information signs saying it would be closed from August 13-21.

I thought, when I get home tonight I'll take a look at a diversion route.

Merrily driving home the same day, a whole three days before the advertised road closure, when I turned left at the Asda junction traffic lights to the roundabout at the rear of Asda I could drive no further as the road had already been shut.

I'm thinking, have I leapt into the future and it's Thursday the 13th? And if that’s the case, I could get Wednesday's lottery numbers, leap back to Monday the 10th which was when I left home to go to work, do £2 on the lotto and win big time.

After turning round, because that part had no road closed signs out so everyone's turning round at the roundabout at the rear of Asda, back to the traffic lights, turn left, follow the directions and back round to home where I met my wife.

When I asked her if this was Thursday, because I believed I had lost three days, she asked what I was looking for. I'm looking for Wednesday's lotto numbers, I told her.

Needless to say, she called me a prat.

I explained whoever is doing the resurfacing on behalf of Swindon Borough Highways department decided that they would not wait for the advertised date of the 13th and to heck with Joe and Joan Public, we can do what we like; we'll shut it on the 10th.

Strange putting all that effort into letting everyone know what’s going on and then changing it all around.

I bet they all had a good laugh over their well earned mugs of tea and bacon butties at early tea break, mid morning tea break, dinner break, mid afternoon tea break, late afternoon tea break and of course pre stop work tea break.

The troops on the ground work hard; shame the planners let you down.
