I OFTEN disagree with remarks made by senior members of Swindon Council but I can’t previously recall such an inane comment as that attributed to Councillor Perkins in your story about the proposed leasing out of Swindon’s country parks (SA, 24 September).
Coun Perkins is quoted as having said, in relation to Coate Water: “There are large parts which are not used”.
Those would be the parts covered by trees, hedgerows and grass, I assume.
It’s a park! Part of it is a nature reserve.
People go to country parks to enjoy the unspoilt green spaces and the wildlife that lives there.
Coun Perkins has been a councillor long enough to remember the strength of opposition to the housing development which is now being built next to Coate Water.
I hope he and his fellow cabinet members know better than to do anything which threatens the beauty of the park itself.
