I READ with interest your report “Lights out to cut 40 per cent off budget” SA Nov 23.

My mother-in-law lives in Bathampton Street, in the Railway Village, at the Faringdon Road end.

In that street the state of the lighting is already really poor without further cuts across the board. There is one light at the other end of the road one in the middle and that’s it.

The only other light is one outside the park but that is not enough to light that end of the road.

Walking from Bathampton Street down to the main road there is only one light near the main road and that’s not much good as it is obliterated by the tree it is under.

My husband has taken to using a torch when he goes over.

For myself I would feel very threatened in that area if alone.

Another thing, a lot of elderly people live there and when there is snow and ice about there is a danger of accidents for them and everyone else if it’s too dark to see where you’re going.

Maybe the council should think again about people’s safety before making further cuts. Dark streets are not safe places to be.
