Advice on recycling

THE most difficult thing about recycling is deciding what goes into the plastic bottles bag.

Swindon Council has issued a very good leaflet to clarify this very difficult area of recycling.

Swindon says yes to the following – all plastic bottles including drinks, milk, cleaning products, shampoo, and cosmetics, pots, tubs and trays, carrier bags and plastic film.

Swindon says no to these items – black plastics, toys, plant pots, household plastic items (e.g. buckets, washing up bowls, electrical items), expanded polystyrene, foil lined packets and pouches.

Recycling is an excellent way in which we can all help to improve our environment.

All it takes is a little care to see that all the right things are going into the right bags.

The Swindon website can confirm what was in the council’s leaflet.

Time for us to change

ABOUT 18 years ago when my wife and I holidayed in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, I went into the Dinosaur Museum and purchased an amulet of dinosaur bone on a chain.

I still have it.

There was a little certificate, now lost, stating the bone was 90 million years old. Think about it, this creature walked the earth 90 million years ago.

In the year 2116, 100 years from now, there will not be many humans beings still alive who are around today.

And that is if we do not destroy the human race and our beautiful planet with it, before that date, not to mention all the innocent creatures along with us. It is their habitat as well as ours and the only one we all have.

My point is that we have such a short time to make our mark in a single lifetime compared to the time our planet has existed.

So why do we see many conflicts and acts of cruelty across our planet?

Is the human psyche programmed to bring about the eventual destruction of humanity and our planet?

I firmly believe the good in the human race will eventually triumph in the end. I believe that we will colonise other galaxies before our sun turns into a red planet and vaporizes the earth.

It is estimated we have six billion years before that happens. I hope for all our sakes I am correct.

But if I am wrong, what is the point of it all?

Locomotive confusion

MAY I be allowed to point out that the splendid picture of Locomotive number 373 in today’s SA is, in fact just that. A locomotive. Not a train.

A locomotive or ‘engine’ pulls a train, as any proud ex-railwayman will tell you.
