ON the subject of the recent roadworks at the A350/C150 junction in Lacock.
In response to Philip Whitehead’s letter on November 17, I would remind him that apart from the small amount of remodelling recently done to aid a right-hand turn into Lacock, this junction was modelled on traffic volumes in July, 2000.
I would suggest that modelling seen as suitable 16 years ago is unfit for purpose for today’s traffic volumes, there having been a huge increase in the volume of traffic now using the A350 and this is leading to driver error resulting in an increase in accidents.
I disagree that a left-hand to Corsham Road turning and a single straight ahead lane would quadruple peak time queues. When the gas main work was done prior to the road works, the road was reduced to a single lane with a 30mph limit and there was no horn blowing, no road rage, no shunts, and no rat running through Lacock.
He expresses concerns for school children walking to school in Lacock village if rat running were to occur. What about the school children from Corsham Road walking to school? They have to stand in the middle of this junction with railings demolished by cars many times and traffic travelling at well over 60mph on both sides, and dangerously switching lanes to overtake.
What does monitoring the situation mean? Wait for another accident, and hope you can blame it on driver error?
This junction is not fit for purpose and something needs to be done before someone else is killed.
