Cold and callous

I would like to pose the question: “Is our society becoming more cold and callous?”

Personally, I believe that it is, and this is typified by the recent vote by the leadership of The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) to effectively back abortion on demand, where President Prof Lesley Regan has stated that abortion should be treated no differently than any other medical procedure like having a bunion removed.

What a terrible statement to make, when in reality we are destroying the life of another human being. Couple that with the fact that for many, abortion has had the most devastating effect on their lives, and can never ever be regarded in the same way as having a bunion removed.

Make no mistake, this is not about medicine, but more about a particular feminist and liberal ideology that says abortion on demand, no questions asked, with scant regard for the most weakest and vulnerable in our society who do not have a voice. A strong society cares for its weakest members,and when our society aborts 200,000 defenceless, voiceless unborn children a year and nobody questions “why” and is so indifferent on the issue of abortion, then we do so to our shame and ultimate harm, and is a further indication of the depravity, coldness and callousness that is becoming tragically more evident in our society.

There are some things even in this “politically correct” age that are simply wrong, and this is one of them.

Reputation comes first

Re Stokes and Hales. These two cricketers have great talent and one should expect maturity from these England cricketers. They should be role models to every club cricketer and youngster.

The ECB have taken firm action in suspending them. They know full well the exclusion means a total whitewash in the ashes series. Reputation is more important than winning.

Strauss and his colleagues should be applauded. Taking 16 players abroad on tour who behave themselves is more important to uphold the reputation of English cricket.

Not so happy now

In reply to John Stooke (Sept 28) according to a study of the past 230 years 1957 was the happiest year in British history.

It was in fact that year Prime Minister Harold Macmillan said “You’ve never had it so good” but very soon after things were to change for the worse. Britain joined the Common Market in 1973 followed by a litany of economic disasters.

In 1973 there was an oil crisis. The country had to suffer under the three day week during 1974. By 1983 there were three million unemployed.

MG Rover was shut down by Tony Blair in 2005. The economy never recovered and the banks collapsed in 2008.

Britain now has the worst trade deficit in the developed world. The current housing crisis is the worst in our history.

This demonstrates that the EU is bad for trade and there are no advantages to Britain being a member of the EU.
