We must find out why town has stagnated

Results of recent research carried out by Forward Swindon which portrayed the town as ugly and average, came as no surprise to the majority of residents; the only surprise being that Forward Swindon paid £10,000 to find out Swindon, a mostly red brick industrial town, located between the oft described dreaming spires of Oxford and the wonderful world heritage city of Bath will, under such circumstances, always be regarded as ugly – and understandably so.

Oh dear, poor old Councillor Tray has finally succumbed to that sad Swindon spectacle of being photographed (Adver April 5) with a bunch of his neighbours (and some of their kids for good measure) in front of their nice blue, pointless traffic signs, that the rest of the borough paid for, staunchly standing their ground. And what utter twaddle they speak. “Queensfield is a residential area”, says Jim Duncan, “resident’s are unable to get off their drives, there’s road rage, abuse, property and cars damaged, old ladies and kids aren’t safe”. Good grief! It sounds more like a road in Brixton than Swindon (sorry, I meant Queensfield).

My wife and I have just spent the Easter weekend in our favourite resort, Weymouth. We decided to go into Poole on Saturday and opted to leave the car in Weymouth as it was difficult to find and retain a parking place at the hotel due to limited spaces. We went into Poole by bus, which was packed with senior citizens using their bus passes. Let the Government withdraw this benefit, at their peril.

I was amazed to read in the Adver the comments made about Four Seasons Residential Home following a recent inspection. You state that concerns were raised over “people's privacy and dignity, the quality of support provided and the cleanliness and condition of people's environments”.

First declaration of interest; I am not a member of St Michael’s although I do attend services on special occasions such as Maundy Thursday. I am not a member of the Church of England and Val Hull is a friend of mine, but she is wrong in her opposition to the refurbishment of the interior of St Michael’s. The church was revamped in Victorian times and most of the furniture dates from that time. She complains the pews will be replaced with “mass-produced chairs”. I have no doubt that the pews were mass-produced in the terms of those times. The present pews are uncomfortable for more than half an hour. Chairs will also allow the space to be used more flexibly, such as when there are concerts.
