RE: Letters SA July 2 from Amanda Horler re the Mechanics’ Institute.
I understand how she feels as I worked there and remember what it was like as a vibrant and bustling building, and I remember all those who worked there to make it so. Now when I pass it and see a dead and decaying ruin I feel a sense of shame that Swindon could let it happen. But it is no good appealing to Mathew Singh, as he came with a plan to put new life into the building, and he wasn’t the first, but was stopped by a council that forget they are elected to look after Swindon not their partys and a group of dog in the manger people who have a plan but no finance. It is no good trying to restore it as it was, those days and way of life are gone, think future and let someone who is willing to attempt to bring life back to Emlyn Square even if it doesn’t succeed at least it will stop the place falling down, then there will be something for your generation to work with.
