Letter from DesMorgan

YOU published a letter from me in which I referred to the Government 'U turn' on Identity Cards. It seems that my delight at the announcement was somewhat premature. It appears that the Government will still continue to develop the information data bases which underpin the basis for identity cards, which I believe is a sure sign that the 'promise' made by the Home Secretary that ID cards will 'never' be compulsory for UK citizens will have as much value as any 'promise' made by Tony Blair or Gordon Brown. It is in fact quite worthless.

I was also quite surprised to read that Phil Woolas MP - a Home Office Minister (the one who when faced down by Joanna Lumley looked like a rabbit in the headlights of an oncoming car) described the UK Passport as the "gold standard" of identification documents. If this was true, why does the passport application form not require the same level of personal data capture as is being demanded for the voluntary ID card.
