STEVE Halden (January 31, 2010) is certainly correct when he says that the Conservative cap on immigration is very loose fitting.
We are all well aware that Labour’s open door immigration policy and misguided attempts to turn our nation into a multicultural society has failed. There has for a long time been a need for a severe curb on the number of people coming to our already overcrowded island. Such a curb however would be ineffective if it did not include those migrants coming from Europe. Our continued membership of the European Union of course makes this impossible.
European institutions are undemocratic and self serving. European commissioners are very well paid and have huge powers accountable only to the European parliament which will never vote against their proposals. Our politicians must try to renegotiate a free trade agreement and pull us out of the absurd and costly present state of affairs.
In spite of an ever growing demand for a referendum on the European issue a dithering David Cameron refuses to commit the Tory Party into holding one. He seems to be running scared of Kenneth Clarke and the pro Europe wing of the party and is loathe to rock the boat.
His failure to act is already turning many so-called floating voters towards UKIP and could cost the Conservative Party an overall majority in the forthcoming General Election.
At this time the Tory Party needs a strong and determined leader and I am afraid that David Cameron is proving not to be that person.
