Letter from Mrs L Baker

4:08pm Tuesday 9th February 2010

I READ with concern the report about the unfortunate event in which a couple were attacked in their own home in Wichelstowe. This was a terrible act that no one deserves which I personally condemn.

As a Penhill resident I was, however, appalled that yet again the mainly law abiding population of Penhill are being singled-out for negative attention.

The couple, who moved out of Penhill in September 2009, will be understandably shaken and scared but that really does not give them carte blanche to bring the whole estate into disrepute. Even if it does transpire that someone took the time to travel all the way to Wichelstowe from Penhill it does not mean that all residents of Penhill are jealous types out to wreak havoc on families who have moved to what they consider to be a better area. The man who was attacked added that he tries "Not to speak to anyone from around there [Penhill] anymore" implying that we are all to blame for his misfortune and that we are all unworthy of his time. This gentleman is entitled to live where he chooses I suppose but not to run down everyone who lives in Penhill.

Disappointingly the Swindon Advertiser always seems to take the time to print these views which imply that someone is 'from' Penhill or that a criminal act has happened 'near' Penhill, bad things happen all over but when Penhill is in the frame you can always guarantee a big headline. Give Penhill residents a break, we're not all bad you know. There are plenty of good things that people do in Penhill, why can't that be reported on as well? A more balanced view is needed, but seems sorely lacking.

I wish the family concerned a speedy recovery and hope that the individuals responsible are caught and brought to justice.
