MOST politicians and economists agree our huge national debt will need harsh measures to correct it. Also this year our contribution to the EU will rise by £2.3 billion. That’s about £250 for each household.

This is the rebate money negotiated away and lost in 2005 which was previously won by Margaret Thatcher in 1984.

In Parliament June 9 2005 the then PM Tony Blair said: “The rebate remains and we will not negotiate it away. Period.”

Gordon Brown was equally adamant. “It is wholly justified... we would not hesitate to use our veto”. (The Times May 23 2005).

So what happened? The French President Jacques Chirac outwitted Blair and Brown. Chirac promised a little reform of the Common Agricultural Policy but did nothing. Like lambs to the slaughter our two senior leaders never extracted any enforcement or guarantee.

So thank you Blair and thank you Brown. On top of everything that’s another huge bill for country and the tax payers you have landed us with.
