I WOULD like to thank Peter Timms for the reference to his book In and around Swindon 1930-60 and I am now reading a copy of it. Although I never worked “inside”, as a Swindonian I have always been interested in its history. I noticed that a long standing, good friend of mine, Roy Hazel, had his picture shown with the cricket team. Further to Peter Timms last letter, I would like just to point out that Lily Watts gained her certificate at Sanford Street Girls’ Evening Class and sponsored by the GWR Mechanics’ Institute.
When I joined Sanford Youth Centre, evening classes were held for boys (ie carpentry) and for girls (ie shorthand typing) but those girls were not students of Sanford Street Boys’ School.
My brother, Geoff, started his apprenticeship at the Victoria Garage and for night school, he took engineering drawing and guess where at? College Street School! His teacher was Mr Mattingley, a teacher at Sanford Street School by coincidence.
I trust that this clears up any misunderstandings that your readers may have had.
