Letter from Janet Harvey

8:56am Friday 30th July 2010

HEAR, hear to Janet Foster and her comments in today’s Advertiser re the development of Swindon, particularly the town centre. It certainly is a rubbish place to shop.

How much more money must be thrown away on stupid things like the new waterfall? What a laugh, I don’t think. Swindon has completely lost its identity over the years since we arrived in 1960. Gone are the wonderful old shops which sold quality goods, only to be replaced by garish chrome and glass monstrosities. Anstiss and McIlroys had some beautiful woodwork in their stores - what happened to that glorious staircase?

There was a decent furniture store too. M&S does its best but will never be anything more than a class three store. As for House of Fraser, well, enough said. Here’s a question, why couldn’t M&S gone in there with all that space to show off their products instead of the cramped situation they find themselves in?

I do not wish to criticise in any way the people who work in Swindon except to say that perhaps more training in customer relations could be taught to youngsters just starting out. Lastly, do we really have to endure the dreadful music blasting out in Regent Street these days? No wonder this generation will wind up deaf before they are 30.
