Letter from Robert Feal-Martinez

MANY people in Swindon and the wider UK were rightly concerned about the huge growth in the big brother state under Labour and were heartened when the coalition seemed to be wanting to roll that back.

It seems once again in such a short space of time this was just one more spin. The Home Secretary Teresa May has committed Britain to join the European Investigation Order without debate. This is a basic threat to our civil liberties. It allows foreign police forces to demand action from British police forces.

It will grant foreign police the right to carry out the real time interception of communications, monitor a person’s bank account, and demand DNA or fingerprints from a person in Britain.

What is even more worrying as UKIP leader Lord Pearson says is “What is more as this is a draft agreement; we will not see the final thing and due to the Lisbon Treaty, when the final version comes out it will be voted on under Qualified Majority Voting at the European Council and thus Britain will not be able to block it if it becomes even worse.”.

So we are told that there is a referendum lock on further transfer of powers to the EU but daily we are losing more control, and in another cynical blocking of people power, it seems the Great Repeal forum is editing or removing suggestions on the EU and things like amending the smoking ban.

This Coalition Government is becoming fast like Labour, which most people will find disgraceful. I wonder what our two new MPs make of so many broken promises already?
