RARE, medium or well done? How they like their steak cooked is a question that divides people, but the recently opened CAU in Bath has hit the nail right on the head with their offering.

In the heart of Milsom Place, CAU offers diners a taste of Argentina with an impressive menu that boasts a meat-lover’s heaven – specialising in different cuts of steak.

On a family outing to Bath, we decided to pop into the cosy restaurant for lunch, but be warned – even at 12.30pm, the restaurant started to fill up so book ahead if you can.

We visited on a Saturday and were handed an Express lunch menu and were taken aback by its value for money.

Two courses came in at £11.95 and that included some steaks. In some restaurants that’s how much you’d pay for just one steak alone and nothing else.

My mum and I ordered salt and pepper squid served with a chipotle mayo to start while my dad ordered burnt tomato and goat’s cheese bruschetta. We loved the crispy and flavoursome squid, which wasn’t overcooked at all and was perfectly balanced with the mayo.

For our mains, my dad and I ordered steak, both cooked medium, which came with chimichurri, rocket salad and thin cut chips.

My mum ordered the CAU chicken burger.

Before going to CAU, I was quite concerned that there wouldn’t be any kid-friendly options for my five-year-old nephew but I was again surprised that he was able to have mains – including steak, fishcake, pizza and ragu pasta – along with carrot and cucumber sticks, chips and a drink for £7.50.

After placing our order we were told by the manager that the Express menu was in fact for only Monday-Friday, but he promised to honour the mistake anyway, which I thought was very good of him.

When our food arrived, I just had to take a picture of it. The steak was cooked to perfection and the chimichurri balanced out the flavouring of the rocket wonderfully.

Its presentation was beautiful, with the chips being served in a small deep fryer rack.

My dad was in agreement and said he was surprised at how well the steak was cooked in comparison to other places. My nephew demolished his pizza in record time and my mum said she would definitely go back to try the other dishes as her burger was perfectly balanced in flavour.

With a soda water and lime, a Coke and a cider, our total bill came to £57.53.

I cannot rate CAU highly enough and the only criticism I have, which is just personal preference, is that they add on a gratuity to the bill automatically.

I think that should be judged by the diners themselves.

Needless to say, they would have done well regardless.
