ONE of the classic British radio comedy shows from the past 67 years will be live on stage at the Salisbury Playhouse in September.

The landscape of British comedy changed dramatically in 1951 when The Goon Show burst onto the airwaves of the BBC Home Service.

Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and company brought a brand of surreal, chaotic humour to the radio.

It was unlike anything that had been heard before and revolutionised the way radio comedy was produced.

With its bizarre characters, fantastical plots and hilarious running jokes, The Goon Show captured the imagination of the British public.

It made household names of its three main stars, all of whom would go on to achieve fame across the globe.

The show’s impact is still felt today with comedians such as Eddie Izzard citing the show as a major influence.

From the producers of the critically acclaimed Round the Horne, the touring production of The Goon Show is set to delight audiences when it comes to Salisbury.

The performance features the following episodes:

• The Dreaded Batter-Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea;

• Tales of Men’s Shirts;

• The Phantom Head Shaver of Brighton.

The Goon Show runs in the Main House of Salisbury Playhouse from Tuesday, September 4 to Saturday, September 8.
