Erlestoke campaigner Richard Loraine-Smith is appealing to people to support his petition to urge the Government to supply safer vehicles to British soldiers serving in Iraq.

Mr Loraine-Smith's petition has been accepted by the web team at 10 Downing Street, and will join others such as that against road pricing, which attracted well over a million signatures.

Mr Loraine-Smith's petition reads: "The Prime Minister promised the Army the equipment it needed in Iraq. We ask him and his ministers to deliver on that promise, in particular the supply of a four or six-cylinder turbo-diesel mine-protected armoured personnel carrier (APC) designed to protect multi-role forces operating in a mine-threatened environment."

IT consultant Mr Loraine-Smith said: "If we can save even one life of a serving soldier by insisting they have the correct equipment to do their work in Iraq, we will have achieved something."

He added: "Compared to all the money being spent elsewhere, British forces' protective equipment is completely inadequate."
