Devizes' library will be closed for a further week while it is refurbished as part of the community hub project.

The Devizes Community Hub and Library on Sheep Street is closed as part of its transformation, with work on the refurbishment due to be complete by the end of this month.

The refurbished facility will re-open and all services will be available from July 24. The council says that unfortunately it was not possible to keep the library open while the final refurbishment work takes place, which also means there will be no public access computers available.

While the library is closed, people who have books due back can return them to the returns dropbox at Devizes, or renew them by phone by calling Chippenham library on 01249 650536, or using the online renewal service, if they are registered for it, at www.wiltshire.gov.uk/libraries.

The customer services team at the hub will still be open to deal with general queries Monday-Friday 8.30am-5.30pm and the registrations service will be open on Monday and Wednesday, 9.30am-3.30pm and on Friday, 9.30am-12.30pm. As usual, appointments will be needed for registrations.

Cllr John Thomson, cabinet member for hubs, said: “Community hubs are vital for local areas. This investment means people can access local services and facilities and have flexible space for the community to use. It made sense to combine the services currently provided in Snuff Street into the library.

“It’s great to see the new hub in Devizes taking shape, and although there will be some short-term disruption, I’m sure it will be popular and well used. In fact, we’ve already had a great deal of interest from community groups looking to use the facilities.”

The new hub has been designed to be the first port of call for local people to access all council services and a range of community groups and activities. A swipe card building access scheme will be put in over the summer so library customers, community groups and visitors can use the building and its facilities outside library opening hours.
